Semi-Saturday has come and gone and after the dust has settled, our two Super League teams have punched their ticket to the finals!  Below are the results and you will notice a familiar pairing for the Cups in both womxn's and men's divisions.

BREAKING NEWS:  After heated negotiations with various providers, the deadline for purchasing all 70th anniversary tickets has been extended to Monday, Aug. 18. Please note that no event tickets will be available after that date.  

If you are unable to attend the 70th Anniversary celebrations, but want to encourage others to do so, think about heading over to the store and purchasing some Student Support Étudiant shares. All of the proceeds will help to subsidize rookie tickets for the Cocktail Party on Saturday, Aug. 30.  Rookies will pay for half of the ticket and the rest will be made up from this fund. So, if you are feeling it, share the Townie spirit.

Never too far from a Townie brother:

Patrick Jawich caught up with Alcides Deschesnes (both of whom will be in Mtl for the 70th Anniversary) while in England.  Clearly celebrating the sunny day with a pint. 

A fitting tribute to Lyle Merrell:

I was sorry to learn that Lyle Merrell has died. The news, though upsetting, was not unexpected, as I gather he had been ill for some time.

He was not a founding member of the club, though he knew and played with some who were. It was always fun to hear him describe those prelapsarian dudes and their hijinks. Some of the tales might even have been true.

He was a vital member of the club through the 1960s and 1970s, and even had an eye on things after he and Sally retired to Winnipeg. He was fast, a useful man on the wing. But his contribution off the field was more important still, as John Dodwell’s note suggests.

Ah, yes, contribution: unlike many, he never hesitated to pay for a round, whether at the Valois Tavern of sainted memory or at Scobie Hall. Laggards of today, take note, SVP.

John mentions Merrell’s Marauders, and rightly so. It was a fun side, though whether it played more than once I cannot say. Here is evidence, however, of a famous and perhaps only victory. Who cares if it required sneaking an extra man onto the field:

Today’s challenge: how many of those pictured can you name? Alas, too many of them have preceded Lyle to that well trod pitch in the sky. At least the … um …  Great Groundskeeper keeps the turf there much softer, I believe, than Mohawk Park ever was.

Rugby Quebec has had many iterations over the years. The different divisions changed over time, as did the combinations and number of teams. Name a non-Canadian team that used to be part of our regular season play, just like clubs such as Ste Annes, RCM and Beaconsfield are today?

Aug 4 Town Crier: Lyle Merrel + final games of the season

Greetings Townies,

Sad news to start off this week's email.  From friend of the Town Crier, John Dodwell:

Lyle Merrell passed away this week, he has left to join the Marauders upstairs. Lyle was 89 years old, born in Manitoba, and was an executive in the pharmaceutical industry.

He learned his rugby in Jamaica, while on a posting down there. Accepting a position in Montreal in 1963, he read an article on the plane about TMR rugby club so he joined immediately on arrival.

Lyle held the following positions:
President: 1967, 1971, 1974; Vice President: 1968, 1970; Captain, Marauders ( 3rd club team): 1973

Lyle was instrumental, along with Geoff Lipman, regarding the selection of our clubhouse in 1971.

Heartfelt wishes from the TMR membership to Sally Merrill and all of the family.

Voici les résultats de samedi dernier.  Un des matchs, en particulier, mérite notre attention.  Celui du groupe développement féminin.  Cette équipe a fait un progrès impressionnant depuis le début de la saison.  Plusieurs jeunes joueuses se sont distinguées sinon pour simplement l'exploit de prendre part aux  entraînements de façon régulière et de se retrouver dans un match où, non seulement le déroulement de jeu pourrait les dépasser, sans jamais se sentir aux dépourvues de la situation.  Sans équivoque, cette équipe a été la plus belle à voir jouer pour la simple raison de leur attitude exemplaire.  Une véritable victoire morale suivie d'un dernier match où les  athlètes se sont donnés à fond pour inscrire une victoire fort belle en mérite et digne d'un accomplissement de groupe.  Merci aux leaders et aux entraîneurs Paul Jourde et  Adrien Dat.

I was both player and coach, heading into Thursday’s practice unsure if I’d even make the game. Isabelle was 40 weeks pregnant, and my Saturday plans were looking questionable at best. At 7:00 a.m., I called in to say I was “probably out”—we were at the hospital, and kick-off seemed a long shot.

By 10:00 a.m., Olivia arrived, and with her, my life changed forever. My in-laws came at 1:00, Isabelle and Olivia were healthy but exhausted. By 2:00, both were fast asleep, with the grandparents keeping watch by the bedside. The room felt crowded, and there was a shortage of chairs. Doing the only “honourable” thing I could think of, I stepped out—through a window of opportunity.

One quick call later: “I might miss the warm-up, but I’m good to go!” I played. We won. And Olivia was born into a world where the bond between a player and his teammates is family.

Une chance que l'on ne pouvait refuser.  Un de nos anciens, Paul Shibata, nous a préparé ce résumé du match réserve masculin VMR/SAB.  Voici son récit :

The dog days of summer are certainly upon us. Midway through the hot season both high humidity and questionable air quality from the forest fires out west contributed to the challenge of today's games. Nevertheless it is always a great day for rugby!

This week's reserves roster had a different look with players on holidays and some out of action due to injury. But in true Townie resolve, the next player up provided valuable experience for everyone. And with only two games left and positioning for the upcoming playoffs still undecided, the intensity was high.

The reserves have been steadily building all season with the set pieces establishing dominance early and all game. The first try of the game resulted from excellent scrummage with an 8-man play yielding the first 5 points for TMR. Alex Mallet made good on the conversion adding 2 more. 7-0 for TMR.

The next points for the good guys came off a beautiful try off another set piece. A textbook lineout with a delayed release froze the defense sufficiently for the score. 24 attacked the gap "late with pace", committed his defender and popped a soft pass to 15 for a try under the posts.

Alex completed the conversion, 14-7 TMR

Set piece dominance again resulted in a 3rd try for TMR. Rolling maul off a lineout 10m from the try line resulted in another score.

Alex now 3 for 3 converted again 21-7.

Heads up decision by fly half Evan Shibata, exploited the gap after a dummy to the waiting pod. The timely run delivered the ball to the try line. Within 2 phases TMR punched in for their 4th try and secured the valuable bonus point.

Alex again was perfect with the conversion tallying the score 28-7 all in the first half.

The second half saw a pushback from St Anne's and though heat and fatigue were noticeable TMR scored for a 5th time. Once again as the scoresheet would confirm, the set piece for TMR did all of the talking. Bold move disguised with a fly half fade to the flow side provided the deception for an eight man blind side try.

If the score wasn't enough to highlight the obvious hours of set piece practice, the dominance was equally impactful on the defensive side. The TMR pack stole balls throughout the game.

The bomb squad players coming off the bench deserve equal recognition.  Quietly they preserved the lead, contributed points and made an impact with limited time. A great example of the levels of contribution was Tristan filling for Alex at scrum half. The characteristic nervous energy, twitchy feet and spatial awareness will serve him well. Nicely done TMR!  Final score 33-21 for the men in blue and gold.  Next week's opponent is Parc Olympique, a squad that bettered the Town's reserves in their first meeting earlier this season.

July 28 Town Crier: Scores, 70th, and Clubhouse update!

Greetings Townies,

Ce fut un autre samedi fort d'action sous la chaleur accablante à Montréal.  Nos équipes continuent de représenter les valeurs du rugby propre à VMR.  Pas de retour formelle sur les matches, mais des faits saillants pour chacune d'entre elles.  Réserves femmes contre RCM : Les troupes n'ont jamais baissé les bras face au RCM, clairement d'un autre niveau de jeu.  Aucun  pointage pour ce groupe, mais des sourires d'après-match malgré le pointage final.  Le groupe réserve contre Sainte-Anne s'en tire très bien malgré un effectif réduit.  Constance de progrès chez nos jeunes et raison de célébrer un premier essai pour Paul Lebeau et Michael Bonadonna ! Les Hommes Super Ligue maintiennent leur deuxième place avec un match dominant contre Sainte-Anne.  Des essais de partout sur le terrain à même l'occasion d'un premier essai avec le club pour le pilier Javarious Burris, qui se contente d'affirmer, ``That's my first try since high school!`` 

The premier game of the day saw our womxn's Super League team take on visiting Ottawa Rugby Club.  A free-flowing affair that saw the action produce over 70 points.  More tries by Magali Harvey and Sabrina Poulin, but the day's standout player was Steve Kalaydjian whose performance in the front row and in post-tackle opportunities saw them chalk up a hat-trick of tries!  With a game like that, it was clear that Steve was clearly Frenchie's Player of the Day.

A recent visit from BC based Kevin Jordan brought out a few of the more grizzled vets from yesteryear.  That's a Joe Ifi lookalike in the front.  Kevin was suitably impressed with the training session, the ambiance between men's and womxn's sides and the meal during the Thursday gathering.

Also at the clubhouse, some of the work that has been going on to improve the property includes these outdoor showers produced by clubhouse manager Adam Guzzo.

Trivia Time:

The first TMR overseas tour was in 1975, when the men’s team travelled to the UK. When was the first women’s overseas tour? Bonus question: where did they go?

July 21 Town Crier: Even more going on!

Some of our junior players will represent Quebec in the Canadian Rugby Championships in Calgary Alberta.  Shout out to the three selected players, Massimo, Lorenzo and Justin and a couple of TMR-based coaches Gelel and Paul.  Meilleurs succès à vous tous !

Nos équipes avaient congé de matches samedi dernier.  The Wxmen's group's Thursday evening was dedicated to their Rugby Olympics.  Clearly, shenanigans were on the menu.  A great atmosphere was on display as the teams competed in various rugby-inspired events.  Below is Juliette Hay taking part in the Quench-your-thirst relay.  Open the beverage with your cleats and consume as quickly as possible.  Love the Flashdance-themed outfit, Juliette!

July 14 Town Crier: Lot's going on!

Greetings Townies,

Another busy week at your rugby club.  First off, shout out to the executive and others who are out there in the small places doing the important work and up front showing our community that we are a club that takes care of its own while also contributing beyond the club to lend our support to a wider society.  Thursday evening, at the end of training, up popped TMR keeper of all knowledge, Ron Chiasson, with freezees for the players!  De plus, notre entente avec la Fondation Ascension a été validée en cours de semaine, nous permettant de contribuer au bien être des athlètes de haut-niveau dans la province.  Les détails dupuis notre site internet https://www.tmrrugby.com/news-nouvelles

Town Crier Toucline Match Reports:

Ce fut un samedi accablant, tant sur le plan météo que sur celui des matches face aux Townies !  Le groupe réserve féminin a fait le trajet vers Québec pour affronter le CRQ. Bref, c'est rare-isme de vaincre le club CRQ, à domicile, tellement ce club domine l'adversaire.  Par contre, le groupe VMR a pris part au match qui a terminé en faveur de l'équipe hôte.  Plus tôt en saison, VMR a dû faire forfait au premier voyage à la Capitale.  C'est donc un certain progrès pour ce groupe.  Essai marqué par Shannon Pine !

SL féminine contre Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue :  Match divertissant malgré la chaleur suffocante à 13h30. Les femmes en blanc ont beaucoup dominé les premiers instants du match.  VMR défendait sa ligne de but pour de longs moment avant de céder à deux reprises. La remise en touche VMR laissant à désirer, mènera au deuxième essaie SAB. Clairement, le manque de personnel se faisait sentir. Une belle course d'Alexia Vitti mène à un essai VMR avant que le vent tourne à nouveau en faveur de SAB. Appel au 911 et c'est Sabrina Poulin qui répond avec une course de 65 mètres, calquée d'une piste de la F1 ! Les avants se présentent ensuite avec des picks-and-go fort efficaces menant à l'essai de Steve Kalaydjian. L'équipe hôte répond avec un essai et le match se joue à l'égalité 19-19.  Que font les troupes de Paul Jourde ? On concocte un jeu d'équipe parfait avec les avants qui dominent la mêlée avant de voir les arrières se distribuer le ballon, créant une brèche dans la défensive que peut exploiter Poulin pour sa troisième de la journée. Belle remontée et deuxième victoire des bleus sur le terrain de l'École Saint-Georges.

The Town men travelled West to visit Beaconsfield RFC.  The hosts, who are always welcoming to fans and run a great canteen for all in attendance, would be keen to consolidate their hold on first place.  Apprentice reporter completing an internship with the Town Crier, Paul Shibata's comments on the game: ''From the competitive perspective, the reserves demonstrated a greater sense of maturity.  There was early intent to identify weaknesses in defense (A,B,C gaps, back three).  This is higher level awareness and is a testament to their progress.  Moreover, the pack markedly improved their scrummaging against a side that prides itself as strong in this area.  Forces were channelled with less energy loss due to better shape. Lineouts were strong when on attack; however, on defense the group needs to self-identify specific set pieces or listen to instructions. This comes back to on field messaging and reception of same.''  Thanks for this, Paul.  Your expertise with the forwards is clearly evident, but the editors would like some names in the next report! 

The last game of the day was a rematch from the men's SL team's only loss of the season.  Both squads are very strong but, I suspect the increased focus on defensive structures during the week made the difference as the home side gave away too many penalties at the breakdown.  Side entry, not rolling, not releasing were all on display, especially in the last quarter of the game when fatigue set in for everyone on the pitch.  As fans, it is always important for us to maintain hydration so that we can keep our wits about us as we critique the game... .  Yours truly was on a steady diet of Old Milwaukee Light, so I was in fine form! Halftime was 3-7 to the men in red.  Early into the second half, a set-play just inside the Beaco 40 meter area saw Stan Blazkowski slither through would-be tacklers to score under the posts. 10-7.  After a successful penalty kick from Paul Arditti, Beaco scored a well-worked try to make it 13-14.  Club President, Tom Ingerman, was roaming the sideline like some nervous father waiting outside the delivery room.  Not to worry, boss-man, Beaco's indiscipline led to two Arditti penalty kicks, the second near game's end after a monumental TMR scrum.  Final tally was 19-14 for an exhausted group led by head coach Marwan Raditzze.

Entente de partenariat entre le Club de Rugby VMR et la Fondation Ascension

Notre club est heureux de vous annoncer officielment notre engagement avec le groupe Fondation Ascension (www.fondationascension.ca).  La fondation soutient des athlètes québécois de haut niveau.  Parmi ces athlètes se retrouvent plusieurs joueurs de rugby, notamment la fière Townie Sabrina Poulin !  Au terme de la saison régulière, le club VMR versera 7$ par essai marqué dans tous les matchs joués durant la campagne 2025.  Ci-dessous, la présidente de la fondation, Sophie Bouchard, en compagnie du directeur des anciens, Pierre Drolet.

Our club is pleased to officially announce our engagement with the Fondation Ascension group (www.fondationascension.ca). The foundation supports elite athletes from Quebec. Among these athletes are several rugby players, including proud Townie Sabrina Poulin! At the end of the regular season, the VMR club will donate $7 for every try scored in all matches played during the 2025 campaign. Below, the foundation's president, Sophie Bouchard, is pictured with the alumni director, Pierre Drolet.

June 30 Town Crier: a four-win Saturday, Family Day, Special Visitors and the Club Store has some great additions...

A heartfelt Happy Canada Day to everyone.  Joyeuse Fête du Canada au groupe !

What a crazy, busy and successful week at your rugby club. Below is a pic from Scobie Hall during the viewing of the Top 14 Final between UBB and Toulouse.  The same image happened upstairs.  After a four-win Saturday, Townies showed their hosting chops as many Club de Rugby Québec men joined in to watch the final, have a meal and share the company of the National Women's team who dropped-in to join the celebrations as well.  La soirée Antillaise à eu lieu par la suite et nous avions besoin de regarnir le frigo à deux reprises... Un énorme merci aux nombreux aidants, jeunes et moins jeunes, c'était pour ma part, très beau à voir cette belle complicité.

It was awesome that Team Canada 🇨🇦 was with us today prior to heading to South Africa. We wish them all the best against the Springboks in preparation for the next Rugby World Cup. 70th Anniversary Legacy Fundraising Update

This from fundraising guru Derek Kopke:  The 70th anniversary legacy fundraising committee is well underway in preparing the campaign. Current snag with Quebec Government is delaying tax receipt status. Should be able to launch in July. Stay tuned.

Mary Redpath

Sad news about a fellow TMR player.  Paul Goldberg advised us that Mary Redpath, a second XV player on the women's team from 20 years back, has passed away.  Thank you to Paul for having planted a tree on behalf of the club in Mary's honour.  Please consult the full death notice here:

Scobie Hall Trivia Test

Club archivist Ron Chiasson's trivia teasers are proving quite popular if we can judge by the feedback!  Brother/sister duos have a few additions, among them the Baker Brothers and les frères Saurin.  Here is Vice-President Ian Campos' tour memory:  Japan TMR tackles tokyo tour 2019 and the famed Lachute 2010 - Greenpeace sailors theme returning a wild polar bear (Francesco, Argentinian 10 dressed in Bernie's wife's costume... later Ian "Cindy" Campos) back to his native habitat.  Other details are available but will be guarded to protect the perpetrators.

It was a tough week for our Townies during their home opener as all four teams registered defeats.  Some good rugby on display and, more importantly, a good deal of camaraderie and teamwork despite the final scores. With the traditional Rookie Night following the games, there was nothing but positive comments from the players as they celebrated through the night and into early morning...

Entente TMR/Fondation Ascension

Notre club est heureux de vous annoncer une entente de principe avec le groupe Fondation Ascension (www.fondationascension.ca).  La fondation soutient des athlètes québécois de haut niveau.  Parmi ces athlètes se retrouvent plusieurs joueurs de rugby, notamment la fière Townie Sabrina Poulin !  Au terme de la saison régulière, le club VMR versera 7$ par essai marqué dans tous les matchs joués durant la campagne 2025.  Ci-dessous, la présidente de la fondation, Sophie Bouchard, en compagnie du directeur des anciens, Pierre Drolet.

Mini rugby jamboree

Throughout the province, there are a series of mini-rugby jamborees.  The first of these was hosted May 25 by NDG/TMR Dragons. Boss-lady Susy Binstock led the event that saw gaggles of young kids from U8 buzzing around like water flies on a calm lake to dozy teens wondering what they were doing at Royal West Academy at 10 Sunday morning.  Among the U8 players was a certain Kirk MacLeod.  Confirming the theory of apples and trees, young Kirk was generous with his play and comments to the referee about a certain knock-on that led to an opposition try.  Pictured below are proud papa and the young up-and-comer.

Finally, today would have been Pascal Coletti's 67th birthday.  Below is a classic photo of the big man.  This is a reminder of all of the sisters and brothers within our TMR family who have gone on to a better place where the wind is always at your back and we are left with nothing but precious friendships once no-side is whistled...

In this 70th anniversary year for the club, a special moment happened last weekend. 40 years after their dad (Paul) played for the blue and gold, the Shibatas brothers (Evan and Kyle) kept the love story going between their family and the Town. Kyle heard we were short players for the game in Québec because of injuries. He didn’t hesitate to drive all the way from Ottawa to Quebec to provide an inspiring performance with his brother that contributed to the 36-0 win.  Proving that TMR values run deep. #upthetown

TMR Trivia Time:

Here is a taste of what will be a full-blown competition during the Saturday evening event of the 70th weekend.  Club archivist, Ron Chiasson, will prepare a Kahoot trivia contest spanning the 70 years of TMR history.  Teams will vie for supremacy during the evening and claim the Town Trivia Trophy.  Final answers are up to Ron and all disputes are subject to public flogging, so be careful of any bunker reviews!  Here is the first in our weekly trivia primer:  

Name five pairs of brothers who have played for TMR.  Bonus, name a pair of sisters having done the same.

Scobie Hall rénovations:

Votre comité exécutif est bien en mode préparatifs pour notre 70e anniversaire.  Plusieurs projets sont en cause, dont ce premier qui a scellé le plafond au premier étage.  Merci aux nombreux joueurs ayant donné un coup de main sous la gouverne de notre gérant du Clubhouse, Sieur Adam Guzzo !

Town Crier April 28: Playing news & schedules, 70th Anniversary teaser and thanks

Sous une pluie froide du 26 avril, nos équipes compétitives ont pris le terrain d'assaut dans deux tournois.  Les femmes ont joué dans le tournoi RCM et ont terminé la journée avec une fiche de trois victoires et aucune défaite !  Notre groupe masculin, étaient inscrit au Tournoi Alex Stefu du Club de Rugby Parc Olympique.  Des résultats dans tous les sens - 0-5 face au Irish, 25-0 à vaincre Beaconsfield et match nul 5-5 contre Parc O- les gars sont en parfaite forme de pré-saison...

Félicitations à nouveau pour Mahalia Robinson et Sabrina Poulin pour leur sélection au sein de l'équipe nationale à sept de Rugby Canada.  Let's go les filles !

70th Anniversary teaser

TMR celebrates its 70th Anniversary this Labor Day weekend, Aug 28-31.  Save the dates and stay informed via email and social media.  Saturday evening will see us gathering at Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf for a celebratory cocktail party.  Guests will mingle as they share a beverage and food offerings, test their TMR knowledge in a KAHOOT! devised by club historian Ron Chiasson and recognize the newest inductees to our Builders and Players pantheon.  Opening remarks and welcome will be from Magali Harvey.  Ticket information to follow.

In the last few weeks, I have reached out to various alumni to assist players in registering to play this season.  Registration costs, $520/$420 student, can be prohibitive for some and an outright obstacle for others.  When I reached out to you, the response that I knew would be there was confirmed.  Je tenais simplement, mais sincèrement, à vous remercier d'avoir répondu à l'appel en offrant votre soutien à ces athlètes qui sauront ce qu'est le sentiment familial au club de rugby VMR.

Note: I will be back at the end of May.  My calendar has me chasing Mrs Frenchie around hiking trails and pubs in Ireland.  I will be sure to keep updated with TMR news, but can't promise to send any email until I get back to La Belle Province.

Town Crier Apri 14: Mise-à-jour sportif, 70e anniversaire et présentation du logo...

Bonjour au groupe !

Pâques est à nos portes ce qui veut dire que le printemps ne tardera pas à se pointer !  Quelques informations du jour...

Mise-à-jour sportif :

La présaison pour nos équipes est bien entamée et nos athlètes sont en mode préparatoire en vue des compétitions dans les Super-ligues féminin et masculin.  L'équipe réserve féminine participera dans la division deux et la réserve masculine suivront leur collègues dans la division Super-ligue réserve.  Les entraînements joints avec le club des Nomades de Laval, sous le dôme à Terrebonne, étaient un franc succès avec un nouveau parrainage entre les clubs pour cette période clé de la campagne.  Nous nous tournons aux entraînements à Brébeuf et l'espoir de voir le terrain dans les semaines à venir ! 

70th Anniversary Friday:

Friday, Aug. 29 will be activities day.  Ideas on the table so far are a golf outing, laser tag and the possibility of a Pickleball Tournament.  The evening will feature an event reserved exclusively for the group affectionately termed the Ancients. TMR players from the '70s and early '80s will gather at Scobie Hall.  The event will take place from 4:30 pm with general club members welcome at the clubhouse after 8:30 pm.  Event and ticket details available soon.

70th Anniversary Logo:

Special thanks to Izzy Walker, a club standout for the women's teams, for designing the 70th Anniversary Logo.  Following the theme of Seventy Strong, the logo is a nod to our club's past in terms of colors and fonts while continuing the social media ''royal'' artwork of the crown which adorns players' names as they appear in our social media posts.  You will see this logo throughout the year.

Sous la direction de Marwan Erraidi, pour les hommes, et Paul Jourde, pour les femmes, les entraînements sont de nouveau au calendrier. La nouvelle de la semaine dernière était encourageante avec plus de 50 participants, beaucoup de nouveaux et une belle présence par la suite au Clubhouse.
